Preventing Hearing Loss

Damage to your hearing is irreversible. Most acquired hearing loss is caused by damage to the inner ear, in particular the cochlea. There are several reasons this can occur, such as:
1. Exposure to loud noises
2. Illness that affects the ear
3. Continuous infection to the middle and inner ear.
Once the delicate bones and membranes are damaged, there is no way they can be repaired. There is also the likelihood that hearing will be distorted or decreased substantially.
The inner ear is only sensitive to extreme pain. Noise at 90 decibels will cause damage to the ear, but noise is not loud enough to cause pain until it is at 130 decibels. This means that we get no warning when the ear is suffering damage. Knowing this, it is easy to understand how the ear becomes damaged over the course of a lifetime.
How You Can Protect Your Hearing:
There are several simple ways that you can protect your hearing, no matter what age you are.
1. Limit exposure to loud noises such as rock concerts or construction sites.
2. Wear earplugs if you can't prevent loud noise exposure; make sure they are properly fitted.
3. Avoid loud music or television, especially when wearing earphones.
4. If you are exposed to a loud situation, make sure you give your ears time to rest and recover.
5. If you think you could be experiencing hearing loss, complete an online hearing test, as leaving the problem untreated increases its severity.
Another great way to prevent damage to your hearing is regular hearing tests. If you are older, or work in a job where you are constantly exposed to loud noises, then a hearing test is a good idea. Online hearing tests are available if you are short on time.
The Importance of Understanding Conversation:
One of the earliest signs of hearing loss is losing the ability to understand conversations. Conversation is key to our personal, social, and professional lives. When hearing loss occurs, understanding what others are saying can be quite strenuous, meaning that holding up your end of a conversation is hard work. Business meetings can lead to embarrassment if you misunderstand what others are saying. You may hear someone speaking but have to guess at some of the words. If you are having problems with conversations, some of the symptoms include thinking that people are speaking too softly or mumbling their words. If this is something that affects you, it is important that you take a hearing test.
